The British colonized India as a result of the British East India Company’s annexation of vast areas of Indian land. The protectionist policies of the British government following the Indian Rebellion of 1857 led to the establishment of British rule from the late 18th to mid-19th century. While there the country experienced development and growth, it and its people also experienced famines, economic and social inequality. The struggle for independence commenced by the major leading party of the Indian National Congress and later, other organizations, and Mahatma Ghandi’s prolific stature and peaceful opposition (after much bloodshed), finally culminated in independence from the United Kingdom in 1947. Independence came with a price, however, the partition of India into two separate sovereignties of India and Pakistan.

Delhi has a humid subtropical climate, hot summers with dry winters but many love the change of seasons.

Dehli is rich with forts, monuments and mosques from the time of the Mughal rulers who once occupied the city. Old Dehli and New Dehli each offer landmarks and attractions for all interests and tastes.

The Red Fort is an historical fort which served as the main residence of the Mughal dynasty emperors for nearly 200 years, until 1857, when the British exiled the ruling emperor and converted the fort for use as a Military camp through the Independence of India in 1947. There are many features and structures to appreciate throughout the various pavillions. One pavillion houses an ornate balcony throne is said to imitate the Throne of King Solomon. Of the two pavillions which served the ladies, one has been converted to a museum, the other still showcases its beautiful carved ceilings and marble pool. You will also marvel at the Royal Family Pavillion and another Private Meeting Pavillion with detailed carvings and embedded stones.
Jama Masjid is another wonderful treasure of the Old City, built in 1650, it is the largest mosque in India. You can climb to the top and see stunning views all around. As with all religious places, you are expected to dress appropriately and conservatively if you wish to enter.
Qutab Minar, was built around 1200 and showcases early Indo–Islamic architecture. The purpose of the structure is unknown and while there are varying theories, such as a monument to commemorate Muslim victory and rule, or a Muslim prayer site, its historical significance remains a mystery. What is known, however, is that it is a magnificent structure with detailed carvings and holy Quran verses well worth the visit.
For the truly adventurous, Chandni Chowk, the main street of old Delhi, and is a crazy but wonderful mix of cars, cycle rickshaws, hand-pulled carts, pedestrians, and animals. This is the best of India’s culture, captivating and chaotic, but it is a must if you like to shop like the locals and find bargains on jewelry, fabrics, and electronics, while sampling some of the best street food in India, or visiting the Karim Hotel for exquisite Mughali dining. This could be an instance where a chauffeur rental car is the better option. Otherwise, park the rental car and stroll with the crowd.

Humayun's Tomb looks a bit like the Taj Mahal in Agra, that's because it was the inspiration for the Taj Mahal's creation. The tomb was built in 1570, and houses the body of the second Mughal emperor, Humayun.
Nearby, experience the Lodi Gardens, built by the British in 1936 around the tombs of 15th and 16th century rulers. It is a peaceful, serene place which will leave you feeling rested and ready for more of your vacation enjoyment.
Swaminarayan Akshardham temple complex is designed to showcase Indian culture with a pink stone and white marble shrine, the beautiful gardens, sculptures, and boat ride. At night do not miss the musical fountain and laser show.
Gandhi Smriti is a monument erected to commemorate where Mahatma Gandhi was assassinated on January 30, 1948. Much beloved by the Indian nation, the “Father of the Nation” lived there for more than 3 months before his death. His room has been preserved and there are sculptures, paintings, and photos on display. His memorial at Raj Ghat is nearby.
