GUIDE TO belfast

Belfast City Airport is the second busiest airport in Northern Ireland serving over 2.7 million passengers in 2016. The airport first started as Belfast Sydenham Airport. Later, it was requisitioned by the Royal Navy in WWII, renamed and used by the military throughout the 70s. In 1983 given increased interest from airlines and consumers, the airfield was repurposed for commercial flights.

Belfast has been the capital of Northern Ireland since its establishment following the Government of Ireland Act of 1920 which partitioned the Ireland into the Catholic majority-controlled free state of Ireland and the British-controlled Northern Ireland. Belfast saw its share of bloodshed during the Irish War of Independence from 1919 through 1921, until the signing of the Anglo Irish treaty in December, 1921. It also suffered during “the Troubles” three decades of guerilla war between Union loyalists and Nationalist/Republicans who wanted to join a united Ireland. The conflict ended with the 1998 Good Friday Agreement. Belfast has been one of the United Kingdoms fastest-growing economies following the signing of the peace treaty of 1998 with the rise of tourism as well as industrial development.

Belfast rainfall is significantly higher than in the southern part of Ireland. You will experience more rainfall during October-January.  Average temperature ranges from 59°F to 39°F. Hotter temperatures during June, July, and August, with cooler temperatures from December-March.

After getting the great rental car you booked through, head on over to the Titanic Quarter.  Whether or not you are a Titanic buff, you will enjoy visiting Titanic Belfast. The Titanic and her sister ships, Olympia and Britannic, were built in Belfast, so naturally there will be many presentations and exhibits to enjoy. If you want to know more about the Titanic’s construction and history, Belfast is the place.

Next, drive over to St. Anne’s Cathedral, the central church for the Church of Ireland, which makes a lot of sense considering how “heavenly” it looks. This church boasts gorgeous sculptures and intricate mosaics. Fans of stained glass windows are sure to enjoy this magnificent piece of architecture. If you’re a fan of the theatre, musicals, live performances, or operas, then drive in your inexpensive rental car to the Grand Opera House on Great Victoria Street. Opened in 1895, the architecture of this grand building is beautiful and elegant, just like an opera house should be. The performances are well worth it as you also take in a magnificent bit of history.

If you are ready for a little outdoor experience, the Belfast Botanic Gardens should be next.  It is a great way to just calm down, relax after a difficult day, and revel in the great deal you got on your rental car with If you’re from the tropics or just enjoy the general aesthetic of the tropics, then park your rental car and enter The Palm House for tropical plants, birds, and seasonal exhibits/displays. History and architecture buffs alike are drawn to Belfast Castle, for obvious reasons. This venue offers many year-round events, and offers booking for one of your own events. Although the current building is from 1870, there has been a castle on the land since the 1100s (12th century).

At the Ulster Folk & Transport Museum you can literally go 100 years back to see what rural life was like. The visitor guides are there for your immersion in the experience. They are dressed exactly as people in those times would be dressed, and doing exactly what people in those times would be doing. You can explore the vintage cars or horse-drawn carriages and see just how people moved themselves around 100 years back (and be thankful of the cheap deal you got on your rental car).

As you enjoy the modern comfort of your rental car, shift your focus and drive to a little bit of nature. Friends of animals are going to either love or hate Belfast Zoo, depending on their political stance. However, the exhibits have been updated recently to care for the 140 different species as much as possible.  Don’t forget to visit Streamvale Open Farm, a great view into what daily life is like in this quiet, untouched area. Here, you can see non-zoo animals and meet them personally. The little ones and adults alike can cuddle with the small bunny rabbits or walk with the puppies.

When you book a great deal for a cheap rental car with, you made the best decision to maximize your vacation enjoyment on your terms.  Drive throughout Belfast and other parts of Northern Ireland and experience all the historic and scenic sites from the convenience of your cheap car rental.  Don’t wait to take advantage of all the discounted rates offers.  Book with any one of the agencies just waiting to give you best price and convenient way to get you started on your dream vacation.
