GUIDE TO PORTLAND

The largest city in Oregon, Portland has had the honor being affectionately called Stump Town, Rose city or RIP city. It also boasts, as its unofficial motto “Keep Portland Weird” which is in keeping with the fact that Portland holds an annual World Naked Bike Ride, is only one of two cities in the US to have a dormant volcano within its city limits, and of the 300 parks in the city, can lay claim to both the largest park in the country and the smallest park in the world, the latter being the two-feet in diameter Mill Ends Park which has held the Guinness Book of World Record since 1971.

HISTORY

The history of the city of Portland, Oregon, began in 1843 when business partners William Overton and Asa Lovejoy filed to claim land on the west bank of the Willamette River in Oregon Country. Portland's name was the result of a coin toss in 1845 between Lovejoy and Francis Pettygrove. Lovejoy wanted Boston and Pettygrove, the ultimate victor, preferred Portland. The city was so-named and on February 8, 1851, it was incorporated. Following the establishment of the city, a period of rapid growth led to a building boom that resulted in massive tree-felling for timber and road clearing. The remaining stumps of trees were left until they could be removed but in many cases so much time transpired that these became permanent fixtures and earned the town the nickname of "Stumptown."

Portland is the largest city in the state of Oregon in the United States of America. If you love books, visit the one-square block Powells City of Books – boasting 2 million copies of new and used books. If you have a huge heart, you must rent a car and take a ride to the Witch's Castle, one of the bittersweet and spookiest places to visit; but make sure you don't get creeped out by the giant black stone walls and the ancient trees, and of course the side commentary of the tour guide!
